Abstract
755,074. High vacua obtaining. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Aug. 5, 1954, No. 22740/54. Class 8(1). A vacuum pumping device comprises a container having therein a thermionically emissive electrode 13 and an accelerating electrode 12 to effect ionization of the gas in the container and means which comprises a filament 14 for depositing evaporated material on the wall of the container. The element 13 is a filament e.g. of tungsten, and the electrode 12 is in the form of a helix. The filament 14 is of nickel or one of the known metallic getters. The helix 12 may be made positive by about 125 volts to the filament 13 and a negative potential may be applied to the container wall. The container is connected to the system 1 to be evacuated by a pipe 7. During operation portion of the tube may dip into a reservoir of liquid air.
