Abstract
1,041,356. Gettering discharge tubes. S.A.E.S. GETTERS S.p.A. March 23, 1965 [April 11, 1964], No. 12298/65. Heading HID. A method of gettering electron tubes utilizes two getters one of which is of the bulk type and is not vaporized but on heating produces a sufficient vacuum (10<SP>-4</SP> mm. Hg) to enable tests to be carried out on the tube whereupon, if the tests are satisfactory, a further getter of the flash type is vaporized. The bulk getter may comprise Zr, Ti, Th, Hf, W, Mo or Nb alloyed with Al, preferably in tablet form and partially saturated with H which is evolved during testing and assists in activating the cathode. The flash getter is preferably of Ba. In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 (not shown) a ring type flash getter 2 is supported above the electron gun of a cathode-ray tube, and a tablet getter 1 is mounted in any of three alternative positions in each of which the effective planes of the getters are at right-angles to allow selective heating with a high-frequency coil.
