Abstract
<PICT:0767554/III/1> A method of forming a thin lacquer of film on a water-wetted phosphor screen of a cathode-ray tube prior to aluminizing, comprises introducing an amount of liquid lacquer into the bulb and rotating the bulb about an axis which varies relative to the vertical so that the lacquer runs over the screen in a spiral path. The bulb 21 is clamped to a carrier bar 19 mounted on an axle 18 which can be rotated by motor 16. The axle 18 is carried on a horizontal axle 12 which can be rotated slowly by motor 15 through worm 14 and pinion 13. In operation, the axle 18 is first held horizontal for insertion of the lacquer; it is then raised to 35 degrees from the vertical and its rotation started at 10 r.p.m., motor 15 then moves it slowly at 1/3 r.p.m. to the vertical and back to 35 degrees; the lacquer remaining after the double spiral is then poured off. After draining, the screen is dried in two stages, first by moist air which dries the lacquer while retarding the evaporation of the underlying water, second by warm dry air to evaporate the water through the dry lacquer film. Suitable lacquers are isobutyl methacrylate or butyl methacrylate in toluene, or nitrocellulose.
