Class 52(2) A folding chair or settee consists of side stands each comprising members D, G pivoted together at 1, side members F pivoted at 4 to the stands, back members A pivoted at 3 to the members F, arm rests C pivoted at 2 to the back members and slidably pivoted at 1 to the side stands, and seat and back supporting surfaces E, B pivoted together at 6 and respectively pivoted to the outer ends of the side and back members F, A, the pivot 3 being displaceable along he members D. As shown pivot 3 is connected to the members D by links H which point upwardly in the erect position of the chair but can be swung clockwise to point downwards to draw down the pivot 3 and fold the whole frame into one plane. In a modified form the pivot 3 can be slid on members D from an upper notch to a lower notch, a keeper bar being provided. The slidable pivots between the arm rests can be completely free but as shown pins 1a on the stands co-operate with notches J on the arm rests, a keeper L being provided. By slightly lifting the arm rests to disengage pins 1a and then leaning back, the occupant can tilt back members A to move the seat and back surfaces to reclined position and when the occupant sits up, his weight restores the parts to the sitting position. The notches J are so shaped that the arm rests will move forwardly over pins 1a without being manually lifted e.g. during the initial folding action.
