Abstract

819,264. Rotary valves. FISKER, A., and RASMUSSEN, A. M. Jan. 27, 1956 [Feb. 2. 1955], No. 2788/56. Class 7(6) The casing of a rotary valve consists of four members 12 ... 15 having interfitting tapered surfaces which permit relative movement of the members radial to the valve .axis on expansion or contraction of the valve, the tapered surfaces being held in fluid tight contact by springs 36. The member 12 fits in a spigot 3 having an opening leading to the cylinder which is connected in succession to the inlet and exhaust manifolds 8, 9, by the valve 11. The four members 12 ... 15 are secured together loosely by bolts 35 passing therethrough, the bolt holes in the members 13, 15, being sufficiently wide to permit lateral movement thereof when the valve expands. The springs 36 act directly on the member 14 and through the bolts 35 urge the tapered surfaces 34 of the members 12, 14, against those of the members 13, 15. The valve may be provided with a passage therethrough for cooling air and the valve and casing may be made of carbon, particularly electro-graphitized carbon. or ceramic. Alternatively, the valve may be of cast iron and the casing of ceramic.
