Abstract

815,824. Chimneys; ventilators RICHARDSON, N. W. April 15, 1957 [April 18, 1956], No. 11797/56. Classes 25 and 137 [Also in Group XXIX] A closure device for flues and chimneys, shafts for atomic plant and ventilating comprises a butterfly valve therein adapted to seat on a flange around the interior, a pair of trunnions on the valve diametrically housed in slideways extending longitudinally in or on the shaft an operating spindle mounted diametrically across the shaft connected by linkage with the valve to rotate the spindle to lift the valve off its seating and move the trunnions along the slideways, with which a device is associated so that the trunnions turn finally to open the valve. In the form shown for a ventilating shaft, on rotating a spindle 12 operating linkage 17, 18, a valve 6 is lifted off its seating to move the trunnions 8, 9 upwards in slideways 10, 11 so that they finally turn over a device 19 to open the valve 6. The lip of the flange 2 has a resilient packing or seats on such a packing 5 in the valve. The spindle 12 is rotated by an operating handle 14 to lift or lower the valve. The handle 14 is retained in either of two positions by, a shackle 15 which can be looped over a stud 16. The slideways comprise a housing 10 and a slot 11 in which are the trunnions each in the form of a flat neck 8 terminating in a block 9 having a concavity 20 to conform with the profile of the device 19 whereby the valve 6 is turned through a right angle.
