Abstract
922,048. Charging shaft furnaces. JOHN MOHR & SONS. Sept. 7, 1961 [Nov. 17, 1960], No. 32156/61. Class 51 (2). Apparatus for charging shaft furnaces of the double bell, double hopper type in which the upper hopper rotates, has a gas seal comprising a sealing baffle 73 disposed around and below the rotary hopper 11 and closed by a bell 63, the arrangement being such that the bell 38 closing the rotary hopper is fixed vertically in relation to the lifting device 50 by its operating sleeve 40, and the bell 63 is movable vertically in relation to the said lifting device by its operating sleeve 61, a compression spring 59 being located between the tops of the two sleeves to allow relative motion therebetween. The buffer 11 is driven by a motor 16 through a spur gear 15 and a ring gear 13, and is supported by lower and upper rollers 20 and 24 respectively and side rollers 29. The bell 38 and its sleeve 40 which rests by a bearing 48 on a support 49 forming part of the lifting device also rotate with the hopper 11 and an arm 52 engaging a slot 53 in the outer framework 54 prevents this rotation being transmitted to the lifting device. In the closed position shown the spring 59 is under compression so that, as the lifting device 50 moves downwardly, the bell 38 leaves its seating and when the spring 59 reaches the limit of its expansion the bell 63 also moves off its seating. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the spring is disposed within the upper part of the bell 38 which engages an annular recess in its operating sleeve 40, allowing vertical movement therein, the spring bearing against a flange on the sleeve 61. U.S.A. Specification 1,891,821 is referred to.
