Abstract

<PICT:1080585/C4-C5/1> An apparatus for removing and replacing coke oven lids 28 comprises means for gripping the lids, e.g. hooks 26, means (not shown) for lifting and lowering the gripping means, and means for rotating the gripping means concentrically with the axis of the seat 29 for the lid. The apparatus of Fig. 3 is carried at one end of a hollow arm (11) (see Fig. 1, not shown), mounted on an axially reciprocatable vertical tubular shaft (1), the other end of the arm bearing a reversible electric motor (13) which rotates a shaft 14 which lies within the arm (11) and which acts through a worm 17 and a toothed wheel 18 to rotate a pivot 19 carrying a plate 20. The rotation is transmitted through hangers 21, perpendicularly arranged slidable and rotatable arms 22, 23, hangers 24 and plate 25, to the hooks 26, for engaging or disengaging hooks 27 on the lid. The shaft (1) is rotatable about its axis to swing the arm (11) clear of the seat 29. The construction 20 ... 25 is stated to allow compression to be made for errors in alignment of the axes of the pivot 19 and the lid 28, and in parallelism between the plate 20 and the lid 28. The arms 22, 23 may be spring-mounted, or a ring or half-rings, carried by the arm (11) or by the loading-car, and encircling the plate 25, may be provided as recentring devices. Instead of hooks 26, an electromagnet may be provided, and the various movements of the whole apparatus may be automatically controlled.
