Abstract

815,672. Tufting machines. WEST POINT MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 20, 1957 [March 23, 1956], No. 5806/57. Class 112 [Also in Group IX] A pattern control mechanism for a tufting machine produces, on a base fabric, a pattern comprising sinuous lines of evenly spaced tufts. The machine has roller means 60, 62 for feeding the fabric past the needle bars 16 in a longitudinal direction, the rollers being mounted on transverse feed carriage movable by a rod 72. A variable speed gear 18 is driven by a motor 14 in synchronism with the needle bar drive, the output of the transmission driving the rolls 60, 62 and the two cams 64, 66. The cam 64 positions the transverse feed carriage according to the chosen pattern while the cam 66 sets the transmission control arm 22 to adjust the speed of the longitudinal feed feed rollers to the appropriate value so that tufts are inserted at equal intervals along the sinuous pattern line. In a modification the rollers 60 are not movable bodily, the needle bars 16, together with the throat plate and associated elements, are carried on a transversely movable carriage operated by the cam 64.
