Abstract
975,626. Tufting machines. SINGER CO. Nov. 7, 1963 [Nov. 9, 1962], No. 43993/63. Heading D1G. A tufting machine is provided with yarn-feeding mechanism comprising at least two members each including a plurality of equally-spaced yarnengaging elements having free edges, the members being so mounted and operated that a plurality of - said elements advance progressively in intermeshing relation, each elements of one of said members having at least a pair of notches formed in its free edge, said pairs each comprising a deep notch and a shallow notch and being arranged with the deep and shallow notches respectively aligned in the direction of motion, yarn-guide means for directing a yarn selectively into the deep and shallow notches, and pattern-controlled means for actuating said yarn-guide means. The yarn-feeding mechanism is incorporated in a machine as described in Specification 853,746. In Figs. 3, 4 a feed roll 22 mounted on a rotary driving shaft 25 is provided with equally-spaced radially-projecting bars 31 formed in their respective free edges with shallow notches 37 alternating with deep notches 38, the shallow and deep notches being aligned circumferentially. Feed rolls 23 and 24, mounted on respective rotary driving shafts 26 and 27, are provided with equally spaced radially-projecting bars 39 which intermesh with the bars 31 and which are formed in their free edges with shallow notches 40 aligned with the notches 37, 38. A yarn 16 follows a sinuous path between the intermeshing bars and is thereby drawn off from the supply by a greater or lesser extent in dependence upon whether it is disposed in a shallow or deep notch respectively of the roll 22. Associated with each pair of notches 37, 38 is a pivoted guide 17 similar in form to and patterncontrolled by means similar to those described in Specification 853,746 for respectively positioning the yarn in one or the other of the notches. In Fig. 5 two yarn-feeding members 50, 51 are provided, each being in the form of an endless chain mounted on a driving shaft 52 and a pair of idler shafts 53. Each chain link 54 of member 50 carries a bar 57 formed in its free edge with a series of shallow notches, and each link 55 of member 51 carries a bar 58 formed in its free edge with alternate shallow and deep notches, the bars intermeshing between the respective shafts 53.
