Abstract
1,011,496. Tufting machines. ELLISON TUFTING MACHINERY Ltd. Oct. 15, 1964 [Oct. 25, 1963], No. 42280/63. Heading D1G. A tufting machine comprises a pair of yarnfeeding rollers adapted to rotate with different surface speeds, one roller having projecting portions adapted to engage the yarns on the other roller to modify the supply of yarn to the needles and thus modify the pile loop height. As shown, yarns pass to the needles over a roller 10 formed with circumferential yarn-receiving grooves 11 and having a surface speed to form low loops. A roller 12, having a surface speed higher than that of roller 10, is provided with a detachable rubber sleeve 13 formed with raised circumferential rib portions 14 adapted to enter the grooves 11 and accellerate the yarns therein to form higher loops. Portions of the ribs 14 are cut away to effect patterning. A smooth roller 15 is movable on an arc X-X to vary the arc of contact of the yarn passing thereover for providing different yarn tensioning effects. It is stated that roller 12 may rotate slower than roller 10, or may rotate in the opposite direction, that roller 10 need not be grooved, and that the rib or roller 12 may be formed by an embossing operation or may be secured thereto by means such as pins.
