Abstract
1,051,819. Tufting machines. SOUTHERN MACHINE CO. Inc. Oct. 12, 1965 [April 21, 1965], No. 43225/65. Heading D1G. A tufting machine comprises means engagable with the backing fabric adjacent the needles for shifting the fabric laterally while the needles are disengaged therefrom, and means for cyclically varying the direction and magnitude of said shifting. As shown, the machine has box-like end structures 12, 14 interconnected by a box-like head structure 16. A shaft 102, journalled in bearings 98 depending from head 16, is oscillated by connections 112, 118 at its respective ends to eccentrics 114 on the main driving shaft 30. Arms 124, rigid with shaft 120, are connected by universal joints to the upper ends of depending links 128, to the lower ends of which are pivoted a horizontal bar 132 provided with depending spikes adapted to engage the backing fabric immediately downstream of the plane of needle reciprocation. Bar 132 is connected by a universal joint 138 to one end of a link 92, the other end of which has an adjustable pin and slot connection with an arm rigid with a pivoted shaft 72. A link 80 has adjustable pin and slot connections at its respective ends with an arm 74 rigid with shaft 72 and a plate 56 pivoted at 60. A follower roller 52 on plate 56 engages a stepped annular cam groove 46 in a disc 38 carried on the output shaft 40 of a gear box 36, the input shaft 34 of which is driven by a chain 32 from shaft 30. The arrangement is such that bar 132 descends to engage the spikes with the backing fabric while the needles are raised, and is then shifted laterally just before the needles enter the fabric, bar 132 being raised when the needles are fully lowered. Bar 132 travels with the fabric while being engaged therewith, and is returned to its original position by spring- biased telescopic arms connected by universal joints to the links 128 and to fixed brackets. A presser bar 152 is suspended by adjustable bars 154 from head 16.
