Abstract

1,161,306. Sewing machines. G. M. PFAFF A.G. 29 May, 1968 [13 June, 1967], No. 25620/68. Heading D1G. A sewing machine adapted to vary the direction of work feed comprises two intermittently-driven feed members disposed below the work-supporting plate in parallel relationship to one another, the feed step values of said members being variable inversely to each other in a constant ratio relatively to a common median value. Needles 11, 12 co-operate with looptakers 20, 21 carried by vertical shafts 18, 19 coupled by gearing 16, 17 to a shaft 15 driven by a belt 14 from a main shaft (9). Cam means (23) on shaft (9) is coupled to a crank 25 on a hollow shaft 26 by a pitman 22 associated with conventional means (24) for varying the extent of oscillatory movement imparted to shaft 26. Housings 27, 28, rigid with shaft 26, slidably support crank members 29, 30 for movement perpendicular to the axis of shaft 26. A shaft 53, slidable in shaft 26, is formed within the housings 27, 28 with oppositely-directed helical teeth meshing with corresponding toothed racks formed on the crank members 29, 30. The latter are coupled by respective links 31, 32 to uni-directional clutches 33, 34 having driven shafts 35, 36 which are coupled by gearing 37, 38 to hollow shafts 39, 40 journailed on shafts 18, 19 respectively. Wheels 41, 42 on the shafts 39, 40 have friction flanges drivingly engaging feed wheels 43, 44 co-operating with respective presser wheels 47, 48. A lever 57, pivoted at 56 on the machine frame is formed with a boss 59 journalling a pin 58 rigid with shaft 53. Springs 61, 62 bias washers 63, 64, mounted on shaft 53, against boss 59 and normally against opposed sides of a fixed bar 60 for centering lever 57. Equal increments of rotation are then thereby imparted to the feed wheels 43, 44 for straight stitching. If lever 57 is moved either to one side or to the other, one of the crank members 29, 30 is lengthened and the other is correspondingly shortened for effecting curved stitching. It is stated that the feed wheels may be replaced by feed dogs, and that the feed may be automatically controlled.
