Abstract

1,016,531. Sewing machines. MATTHEWS & BIRKHAMSHAW Ltd. Feb. 5, 1963 [Feb. 10,1962], No. 5194/62. Heading D1G. A linking machine has a hooked needle which gradually tapers to a point. In Fig. 3 a rotary dial 1 carrying points 1a is driven from a motor 5 via belt gearing 9, worm gearing 10, 11 and a shaft 14. A curved latch needle 16, which moves outwardly from within the dial, is carried by an arm 12 pivoted at 13. Arm 12 is oscillated via a connecting rod 15 from an eccentric 14 driven by gearing 10. Needle 16 passes through an aperture 28b in a fixed bar 28 to co-operate with a threaded looper 18 mounted eccentrically on a pivoted disc 19 which is oscillated via a connecting rod 26 from an eccentric 25 on shaft 14. In Fig. 9 a curved, hooked needle 116 is carried by the lower arm of a lever 129, the upper arm of which is connected by a link 131 to a pivoted plate 132 which is oscillated via a connecting rod 133 from an eccentric 134 on a driven shaft 135. Lever 129 is slidably journalled on a pin 130 and is biased. There along by a spring 136 towards an abutment 137 on pin 130. A wedge member 138 slidable transversely on pin 130 and interposed between lever 129 and abutment 137, is connected by a link 140 to one arm of a lever 141, the other arm of which carries a follower roller 142 co-operating with a cam 143 on shaft 135. Needle 116 thereby receives a sideways swinging motion. The pivoted and threaded looper 118 is oscillated via a linkage 145, 146 from an eccentric 147 on shaft 135. The sewn work F is removed from the points la by the inclined edge 158a of a member 158, Fig. 11, carried by an arm on a shaft pivoted in a bracket 160 and carrying a second arm connected to a rod biased by a spring 163 to raise member 158 to the operative position. An upward pull on a knob 161a serves to lower member 158.
