Abstract

1356152 Tufting machine SINGER CO 18 May 1971 [17 July 1970] 15616/71 Heading D1G [Also in Division F2] The needle plate or, as shown, the needle bar of a tufting machine is reciprocated by an adjustable stroke mechanism comprising a first member (28, Figure 2 not shown) rotatable with the mainshaft 26 but pivotable thereon by a cross pin 30 and a second member 32 surrounding the first and connected by a link 40 to the reciprocating member 48. The stroke of the member 48 can be varied, while the shaft 26 is rotating, by a calibrated handwheel 54 which rotates, through worm gearing 64, 66, a shaft 68 provided with threaded end portions of opposite hand engaged by nuts 74, 76 connected by members 70, 72 to annular members 88 slidable on the shaft 26. Rotation of the hand-wheel causes pairs of members 88 to slide in opposite direction and vary the tilt of the first member (28) to which they are connected by links 92. It is stated that the lowest position of the needles 52 is the same irrespective of the stroke selected.
