A sewing machine in which the needle bar is movable between two lateral positions is so arranged that in one lateral positon stitches are formed and in the other lateral position stitches are dropped. For making tacking stitches the machine is operated in a repeated cycle comprising a plurality of reciprocations of the needle bar in the second lateral position followed by a single reciprocation in the first position. As shown, a rotary hook 4 has a loop-seizing beak 2, and the eye 3 of the needle 1 is positioned at a greater distance than normal from the axis of the rotary book whereby in the right hand lateral position of the needle bar, as shown, the beak passes above the needle eye to form stitches, while in the left hand lateral position of the needle bar, Fig. 6, the beak passes below the needle eye and stitches are dropped. A special needle may be used with the eye positioned further than normal from the print, or a normal needle may be fixable in two alternative positions of axial adjustment. Alternatively, the normal phase relationship may be altered either between the needle bar and its driving shaft, or between the rotary hook and its driving shaft. The needle bar may be moved to its alternative lateral positions either by hand or automatically under cam control.
