Abstract

955,095. Knitting-machines. MATTHEWS & BIRKHAMSHAW Ltd. Feb.13, 1961 [Feb. 12, 1960], No.4975/60. Heading D1C. A straight bar rib machine is provided with points 3, 3<SP>1</SP> which engage the loops on the machine needles 2 and extend them as illustrated in Fig. 8 to enable the frame needles to pass upwardly through them. Thereafter the frame and machine needles go through a knitting motion without taking yarn, the frame needles not being pressed but the machine needles being pressed so that the loops are completely transferred to the frame needles. Plain knitting is then continued on the frame needles only and an adjustment is made to the quality control to enable the plain knitting to simulate the quality of the rib. The points are mounted in two bars 4, 4<SP>1</SP> and are symetrically disposed so that they move in opposite directions to transfer their loops, the two central machine needles having their loops transferred to the same frame needle. To permit this transfer the bars 4, 4<SP>1</SP> are relatively offset to allow for overlapping movements with the result that the loops on the two innermost points are transferred to the same frame needle.
