Class 112 A sewing machine comprises an upper structure which may be optionally fitted to either a flat bed (Fig. 3) or a bed (Fig. 6), having a freeended work arm, in both beds the relative positions of the bores locating a loop taker driving shaft and a material feed shaft being arranged to correspond with each other. The rotating loop taker drive used in the flat bed is the same as that described in Specification 855,779. The rotating loop taker 148 provided in the free-ended work arm is carried on a shaft 147 rotated through a pair of spiral gears 145, 146 by a shaft 144 driven at twice the speed of a driving shaft 141 by gearing 142, 143. The bores 162, 162<SP>1</SP> locating the driving shaft 141, the bores 161 and 161<SP>1</SP> locating the feed advance shaft 150 and the bore 46<SP>1</SP> locating the feed adjustment slide 37 correspond in size and position with the corresponding bores 157 and 157<SP>1</SP>, 45<SP>1</SP> and 160, and 37<SP>1</SP> in the flat bed. In the sewing machine the driving arrangement, material feed mechanism, needle thread take-up drive, needle drive, and the arrangement for oscillating the needle laterally are all the same as those described in Specification 855, 779.
