1,063,312. Knitting; roller arrangements; mixing fibres; carding engines. GLENOIT MILLS Inc. Jan. 1, 1965 [March 26, 1964], No. 57/65. Headings D1C; D1D; D1F; D1K and D1N. A circular knitting machine has an auxiliary sliver delivered at a variable rate under the control of an electric motor and fed into the base sliver as it is delivered to the doffer 23 feeding it to the needles so that a high pile fabric having stripe effects is produced. In a multifeed knitting machine a carding head is provided at each station and comprises three pairs of gear feed rollers for example 40, 41, Fig. 2, driven through gearing from the main gear 14 of the machine and which deliver the base sliver to a card roller 24 from which it is transferred to the doffer 23 feeding it to the needles. The carding head for the base sliver is as described in Specification 1,000,455. Mounted above the card roller and doffer is an auxiliary sliver feed mechanism comprising a pair of gear rollers 83, 84 driven by a flexible shaft (150), Fig. 1, not shown. A pulley 110 on the shaft of roller 41, drives through a belt 112 and gearing a cam (120) Fig. 1, not shown, which influences through a rack and pinion a variable resistance coupled in the circuit of an electric motor (138) driving the roller 83 through the flexible drive (150). Consequently as the base sliver is fed by its rollers 40, 41, the speed of the electric motor is varied to cause the rate of delivery of the auxiliary sliver to the card roller and doffer to be varied such that at each station the needles taking the auxiliary sliver with the base sliver do so with the resulting effect of producing a striped pile fabric.
