Abstract

A flat fabric is produced on a stationary cylinder and dial machine having a section of the cylinder and dial devoid of needles. The fabric is thereby produced somewhat in the form of a U by feeding yarns from ten yarn feeders continuously rotated with the rotating needle cams. The yarn from each feeder is clamped as it passes the section devoid of needles and is simultaneously severed. The flat fabric thereby produced is withdrawn from the needles and fed into a receptacle. The machine comprises a cylinder 3 supported on a stationary ring 2 mounted on a housing 1 containing a motor 18 driving through gearing 15, 16 a shaft 14 driving the dial cam support 9. The drive to the cylinder cams 8 is through members 11 fixed to the dial cams support. The thread guides 10b are supported by and rotate with the cam supports. A Jacquard pattern mechanism 35 is mounted adjacent the section devoid of needles to influence the needle cams. The ring 2 is eccentrically mounted with respect to the housing 1 such that a gap 25 is left between the underside of the ring 2 along the majority of its circumference and the housing 1 through which the fabric issues to be engaged by oscillating take down members 27. These members 27, which are oscillated by rotating rollers or cams 29 secured for their rotation to the shaft 14, engage the fabric and draw it downwardly to feed it into a receptacle 31 of U-shape configuration placed beneath the ring 2 and surrounding the housing 1. The yarn supply bobbins for the feeds are supported on the upper end of the shaft 14. The mechanism for severing the yarns in the non-needle section of the machine comprises a hook shape member 37 sliding in a slot in the needle cylinder and adapted to engage each yarn in turn and draw it down in contact with a cutter positioned adjacent to the member 37. The yarns are also clamped to enable them to be re-fed to the needles by the yarn guides as they repass the needles. To avoid distortion of the edge of the fabric the ends of the outgoing and ingoing yarns are secured in an undulating form between combs 43 and 44 positioned at the edges of the section devoid of needles, the teeth of which project between each other. A yarn inserting member 46 is pivoted above the combs and is periodically oscillated to urge the yarns between the teeth of the combs where it is frictionally held gradually passing between the teeth as the fabric is withdrawn. In addition a wrap yarn can be fed to the end needle or needles to stiffen up the edges of the fabric.
