Abstract
813,629. Combustion chambers. BUTTERWORTH, A. J. Feb. 20, 1956 [Nov. 19, 1954], No. 33514/54. Class 7(3) A projection on the head of a piston is formed with a combustion recess 12, Figs. 3 and 4, therein into which lead open-topped grooves 13 formed in the wall of the projection. In Figs. 3 and 4 the projection 13 is hemispherical and projects into a corresponding recess in the cylinder head at top dead centre, the displaced air forced through the grooves 13 setting up a strong swirl in the recess 12. Shallow depressions 14, 15 are formed in the projection 13 opposite the inlet and exhaust valves 2, 3, Fig. 2, the inlet passage 9 being inclined at its end to cause the entering air to rotate in the cylinder. The piston 4 may be formed of aluminium and the bottom of the recess 12 is preferably formed by a cast-in disc 16, Fig. 4, of heat resisting steel 16 insulated from the piston by insulating material such as mica 17. In a modification the disc 16 is held in position by a circlip expanded by a grub screw and in Fig. 6 the disc 16 is screwed in position and recessed to leave an air space thereunder, the material 17 being omitted. In Fig. 8 the recess 12 is provided in a lozenge shaped projection 20 on the piston crown which projects into a corresponding recess in the cylinder head. The inlet valve may be fixed to a rocker arm as described in Specification 710,073.
