Class 97(3) In a draughting machine of the parallel motion linkage type in which the drawing head is counter balanced by the tension in a spring, a flexible extension of the spring is windable on a drum which is retained against the tension of the spring by friction or by releasable locking means. As shown, conical surfaces 19, 20 frictionally engage under the axial thrust of spring dished washer 22 controlled by nut 24 and prevent drum 16 from being turned by the tension of a spring acting on member 15. Knob 17 can be rotated manually. Pin 21 is secured in fixed bracket 9 mounted on the drawing board. In another form (Figs. 4, 5, not shown) the drum is fast with a ratchet wheel which is retained by a manually releasable pawl. The pawl may be spring pressed against the ratchet wheel.
