[Also in Group XXI] A single-beat lift valve 4, Fig. 2, which controls the outflow of pressurized fireextinguishing liquid, gas or powder from a container 1, is mounted on a spindle 8 having an enlarged upper-cap portion 10; a channel member 13, which is secured to the valve body 2 by a nut 14, carries pivots 16, 18, Fig. 1, the former supporting an operating lever 15 of channel form which rests on the cap 10, and the latter having a carrying handle 17 mounted thereon. A plate 19, which can slide beneath the cap 10 transversely to the spindle 8, incorporates a key-hole slot 20, Fig. 3, and when the handle 17, Fig. 1, is in the rest position, shown dotted, the plate is prevented from moving by a cam on. the handle which has two ears 21 that form abutments for wings 22, Fig. 3, on the plate; the valve 4 cannot be opened because the smaller part of the slot 20 prevents the passage therethrough of the cap 10. Upon lifting the handle 17, Fig. 1, to the position shown in full lines, the ears 21 move away from the wings 22 and a groove 23 in each ear registers with the corresponding wing 22; when the plate 19 is mariually translated the wings 22 enter the grooves 23 and lock the handle 17 in the operative position. The plate 19 has an upstanding tongue 24, Fig. 3, with a head 25 which extends through a slot in the lever 15. Upon squeezing the lever 15 towards the handle the valve 4 is unseated, the cap 10 passing through the enlarged part of the slot 20. The plate 19 may be tapered to produce a wedging action tending to keep the valve closed when the plate is in its safety position.
