817,272. Valves. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 31, 1955 [Nov. 1, 1954], No. 31478/54. Class 135. [Also in Group XXI] A rapidly opening valve for installation in a. fire extinguishing or drenching system comprises a closure member 1 hinged at 2 and coacting with a seat 8 in a housing having an inlet 6, the closure member being held against the seat by a rod 12 having a forked end 12a straddling a lug 1a on the closure member and extending outwardly through a sleeve 11 and sealing bellows 27 to terminate in an adjustable head 13 which is engaged by a lever 14 pivoted at 15 and having a pin 17 engageable by a detent 18 pivoted at 20. When the detent 18 is operated, e.g. by a solenoid 24 under control of a light-sensitive cell or by an explosive cap, to release the pin 17 the closure member 1 is opened by the combined effect of its own weight and the pressure of the liquid in the inlet 6. The lug 1a is cam-shaped to minimize lateral reaction of the valve member on the rod 12 and thereby to prevent jamming of the rod. According to the Provisional Specification, a mushroom-type closure member may be employed.
