Abstract
811,397. Projectile fuzes. JUNGHANS, A. G., Geb. Nov. 19, 1956 [Nov. 18, 1955; Oct. 18, 1956], No. 35295/56. Addition to 788,628. Class 9(1) Direct action projectile fuze having clockwork controlled self-destruction device, the movement regulator of the clockwork and one or more of the train of gears between the drive and the regulator being directly mounted on the firing pin 13 as in the parent Specification has the safety latch of the percussion pin controlled by a lever adapted to be released by centrifugal force, the lever being held at safe for a predetermined period by an element operatively connected to the clockwork movement. The latch 39 has a depending arm 39b engaging a pin 38 carried by a lever 100 pivoted on a pin 101 mounted in the plate 32. As the fuze rotates a torque is produced tending to move the lever counter-clockwise so that the pin 38 moves outwards from the arm 39b, but the lever arm 100b is immobilized by a weight 102 riveted to a rack 104 which meshes with pinion 23 and is guided by tracks in the plates 32, 35. The length of the abutment surface 102a corresponds to the predetermined safety path during which the lever 100 cannot turn. The guide tracks for the rack can be inspected from the periphery of the fuze to check the setting. Plates 105, 106, 107 housing the primer 14 and safety means for the detonator 15 are held in position by a nut 109 and provided with flash passages which are blocked by a slide valve 110 during acceleration of the shell. When acceleration ceases, centrifugal force moves the valve aside. Gas passages 11d extend upwardly from the primer chamber to vent the primer gases, should it be accidentally ignited while the valve 110 is in the safety position. A thin metal or plastic disc 111 may cover the passages 11d After firing the shell an element (not shown) releases the regulator and frees the clockwork mechanism thus liberating the rack 104, which then moves outwardly and when the rack is out of mesh with the pinion, the lever swings suddenly to release the latch of the firing pin. In a modification, Fig. 7, the slide valve 110 is replaced by a rotary valve 210 pivoted on latch arbor 211. The arbor 211 has a collar cut away to form an abutment for the lever 100 to prevent rotation of the latch arbor (and hence of valve 210) while the lever engages the weight 102. In this case the firing pin and flash pass ages are freed simultaneously.
