Abstract
839,665. Ammunition fuzes. JUNGHANS, H., and JUNGHANS A.G., GEB. Feb. 20, 1958 [Feb. 20, 1957], No. 5609/58. Class 9(1) A direct action percussion fuze for spinstabilized projectiles comprises a two-part casing 10, 11 housing a striker 12, a firing pin 13 and a percussion cap 14 together with a centrifugally released safety device for locking the firing pin. The safety device comprises a piston 15 housed in a cylindrical recess 10a and supporting a spiral member 16 enclosing four balls 17 and a plate 18 fitted loosely around the pin 13. A plate 20 held in place by the casing has an abutment 19 pressing on the balls 17 and a spring 24 supports the piston, which is provided with a guide flange 15b and a circular rib 15c bearing on a spiral member 21. The member 21 surrounds a bushing 22 having a slot housing a safety catch 23, which engages a collar on the firing pin. After firing the projectile, the spiral member 16 due to the centrifugal force produced by the spin moves outwards until it bears against the wall of the recess 10a and when the balls 17 have moved beyond the abutment 19, the spring 24, thrusts the piston 15 forward and so releases the member 21. Member 21 then unwinds and the catch 23 releases the pin 13 leaving the fuze armed for operation on impact. A self-destruction device Z operated by decreasing spin may be provided on the plate 20 and comprises a lever Z 1 locking a spring-stressed striker member Z 2 . The lever Z 1 is moved by centrifugal force to release the striker Z 2 , which is then driven against a ring Z 4 on the pin 13. In a modification, the balls 17 are replaced by segments which form a core for the first spiral member. The piston is given a conical under-surface. which bears against the sloping upper surfaces of ring segments taking the place of the spring 24. On release of the piston by the first spiral member, the ring segments move outwards and push the piston forward to release the second spiral member as before. In Fig. 8, the piston is replaced by a bell-shaped member 50 having a cylindrical hub 50a separated from an abutment 51a on plate 51 by a locking member 54, the hub 50a and abutment 51a being used as the core of two spiral members 52, 53 functioning as the member 16 in Fig. 1. The bushing 22 housing the pin locking member 23 is the core of a spiral member 55 on which rests a sheet metal bridge 56 serving as abutment for a spring 57 urging the bell 50 forwards. Arms 50b on the bell project through slots in the bridge to restrain the member 55. The members 52, 53 may be replaced by a single member of inwardly decreasing width.
