Abstract
788,628. Projectile fuzes. JUNGHANS AKT. GES., GEB. Jan. 31, 1956 [Jan. 31, 1955], No. 3128/56. Class 9(1) A direct action percussion fuze for a projectile provided with a clockworkcontrolled self-destruction device has a safety device preventing initiation on the first part of the trajectory. The firing pin 13 axially aligned with a primer 14 and a detonator 15 passes through the clockwork movement and near its bottom end acts as an arbor for a regulator 19 comprising pallets 19a engaging a toothed regulator wheel 20 with a pinion 21 meshing with a train wheel 22 mounted on pinion 23 for free rotation about the pin 13. Elements 24, 25, 26 each comprising a wheel and pinion complete the gear train, element 26 being in mesh with a centrifugal driving segment 27. The movement is locked by a forked member 29 embracing the regulator 19 and having upturned ends 29a engaging the wheel 20, until the member 29 is moved radially outwards by centrifugal force sufficient to overcome a spring 31 engaged by a lug 29b of the locking member. A safety member 39 engaging a shoulder 13b of the pin 13 carries an arm 39b engaged by a pin 38 on a control lever 34 which meshes with the pinion 23 and has a pointer arm 34b which can be observed through a window 37 to determine whether the fuze has been assembled correctly. Member 39 carries a pointer 39c for inspection purposes. As the clockwork runs down, lever 34 moves until it is out of mesh with pinion 23 and, at the same time, the member 39 releases the firing pin, thus arming the fuze for impact operation: After a given time, if impact does not occur, the weighted segment 27 carries a pin 43 out of engagement with a lever 45, which then rocks to release a sleeve 47 surrounding the striker. A spring 49 then drives the sleeve on to a plate 50 to drive the striker against the primer. Premature initiation of the detonator 15 is prevented by a slide 53 adapted to rotate under centrifugal force to free the flash passage, the slide being prevented from returning by engagement with a spring. A foil may be placed between the pin 13 and the primer 14.
