Abstract
830,889. Ammunition fuzes. JUNGHANS A. G. GEB. Oct. 20, 1958 [Oct. 18, 1957], No. 33409/58. Addition to 788,628. Class 9(1) The clockwork fuze described in the parent Specification having a firing pin 13 held at safe during the initial part of the trajectory by engagement with a pivoted latch 39 having a depending arm 39b is immobilized by abutment with a control pin 38 mounted on a lever 100 which is a modification of the lever shown in the earlier Specification. Lever 100 pivots about a pin 101 and has unbalanced arms 100a, 100b<SP>1</SP>, the heavier arm 100a producing a torque on the lever in a counterclockwise direction and the arm 100b<SP>1</SP> bearing against a centrifugal weight 102 carrying a rack 104, which meshes with a pinion 23 controlled by the clockwork mechanism. The weight 102 slides between guide surfaces and its length abutting the lever 100 corresponds to the predetermined safety margin, after which the lever is freed. A passage 300 for the firing pin 13 blocked by a rotor 303 mounted on a shaft 304 is aligned with a tetryl detonator 302. A bore in the rotor contains a heavy metal insert 305 causing the rotor to rotate under centrifugal force until a primer 301 is aligned with the pin 13 and the detonator 302, the motion of the rotor being halted by its surface 303a impinging against a pin 306. In the position of rest a blind bore 303b is aligned with the pin 13. Movement of the rotor is initially prevented by a latch pin 309 bearing against a milled surface on a shaft 308 to which is keyed a lever 307 engaged in a notch in the weight 102. When the bolt 102, 104 driven by the pinion 23 reaches its outer position, the lever 100 is released and control lever 307 rotates so that the latch pin 309 is freed and the rotor can rotate to the armed position. To prevent unintentional ignition should the fuze head be removed from the lower portion, a safety member 310 is placed in a transverse bore of the fuze base, the member 310 being apertured to receive pin 13 and being held in position by a pin 311 projecting from the fuze head. If the fuze head is removed, the rotor rotates and the member 310 moves until it covers the primer 301.
