810,734. Collapsible vestibules for railway vehicles. SPENCER MOULTON & CO. Ltd., G. Feb. 14; 1957 [Feb. 28, 1956], No. 6191/56. Class 103(4), A vestibule for a railway corridor coach includes a flexible diaphragm 3 and face plate 4 resiliently mounted on rubber torsional shear springs 5 to 12 which hold adjoining diaphragms and face plates ir their articulated positions Conveniently the spring: are of the kind forming the subject of Specifications 676,098 and 676,190. The outer metal shells 14 and filling plates 21 of the springs 5, 9 are bolted to the vehicle door frame 2, whilst the shells 14 and plates 21 of the springs 8, 12 are bolted to the faceplate 4. The shafts 15 bonded by rubber 13 to the shears 14 are in the case of the springs 5, 8, rigidly connected by pairs of links 20 to the shafts 15 of springs 6, 7 and link pairs 20 likewise connect the springs 9, 12 with the springs 10, 11. The springs 6, 7 and 10, 11 are respectively bolted together with the interpositioning of fitting plates 21. A similar assembly of springs is provided under the vestibule foot plate. Whilst the springs may support the weight of the vestibule it is preferred for the latter to be sumpported by conventional sliding means associated with the foot plate. When adjoining coaches are coupled the vestibules abut and close the linkages to stress the springs. In another embodiment, a single spring having a depending arm is used at each upper side of the diaphragm 3 whilst below the foot plate four springs, as already described, are arranged with their axes horizontal. In a still further embodiment an approximately vertical tie rod is provided between the coach and the face plate.
