Class 143 A heavy duty lever system for rail and like vehicles carrying a sub-frame movable in response to a load thereon and weighing mechanism operated by the sub-frame comprises a bar 25 extending longitudinally along each side of the vehicle, and a pair of spaced parallel plates 22 welded to the bar at each corner of the sub-frame forming a lever arm through aligned apertures in which pins 21, 23 extend carrying in keyways knife edge members 20, 24, so that the pins 21, 23 may be rotated and the knife edges adjusted in distance apart before the pins are welded in situ to the plates 22. The lever arms formed by the plates 22 and by an arm 26 secured to each of the bars 25 pivot about an axis determined by the knife edge 24 and are connected at the ends of the arms 26 through links to a common coupling member connected by various levers increasing the mechanical advantage of the system to the spring-controlled pointer of a weighing scale. The knife edges 29 bear upon seat members 2 carried on concave caps 28 which rest on rollers 29 supported by a concave base 30, said base being suspended by straps 31, a pin 32 and U-rods 33 from the upper flange of a fixed structural member 10 of the vehicle. To permit the subframe and lever system considerable play the sub-frame 12 likewise is at each corner connected to the knife edges 20 by a pillar 15 having a base which is carried on a roller 17 supported in a concave base 18 to which the seating member for the knife edge 20 is secured. Guard plates 44 excluding dust &c. are detachably secured by screws to each edge of the plates 22 and a shield cap 45 is secured to the pillars 15. Part of the load on the weighing scale may be borne by an adjustable counterweight acting on the linkage connected to the scale.
