Abstract

822,285. Railway vehicle undercarriages. SPENCER, MOULTON & CO. Ltd., G. Feb. 9, 1956 [July 9, 1954], No. 20148/54. Class 103(6) A railway vehicle spring suspension comprises one or more rubber spring units according to Specification 763,432 and disposed in front of and one or more behind the axles adjacent to each wheel, each of the units being in contact with or secured to a dead axle or an axle box and the vehicle body or frame. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the spring units 5, for a dead axle 3 are mounted between a main longitudinal frame member 1, to which the body (not shown), is directly carried and the ends of a channel section beam 10 bolted to the axle 3. Each spring 5 comprises outer and inner frusto-conical metal members 7, 8 bonded to a frustoconical rubber member 6. The outer member 7 is bonded to a tubular member 15 having a base plate 11 secured by bolts 9 to a plate 12 welded to the beam 10. The inner member 8 has an abutment secured by a bolt 17 to a dust cover 16 and to the member 1. The wheel, rotatable on the axle 3 is disposed outside the member 1. In another embodiment shown in Fig. 4, concerned with a bogie frame 21, wherein the wheel 24 is disposed inside the frame, springs 35, 36 are mounted between bearer brackets 37, 38 on the frame 21 and integral projections 27, 28 of the axle box 26. The frame 21 is open below the brackets to facilitate insertion or withdrawal of the suspension and axle, the open section of the frame being bridged normally, by a tie bar 41 bolted to the frame. In a still further embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), a pair of springs is disposed on each side of the axle box, each pair comprising one spring above a longitudinal projection of the axle box and the other spring below such projection. The upper springs act between upper bearer brackets and the box projections whilst the lower springs are mounted by hangers between the projections and lower bearer brackets.
