Abstract
746,010. Bogies for railway vehicles. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 27,1954 [June 11, 1953], No. 15637/54. Class 103 (6). The bogie frame has a pair of longitudinal side frame members 2, Figs. 1 and 16, each comprising two members 60 of L-shaped section, the horizontal flanges of which are welded together at the edges, bottom plates 64, 66 being welded between the lower edges of the members 60, so that the frame member 2 is of box section at its extreme ends and along portions of the length between its centre and end portions. The ends of each frame 2 are closed by plates 68. Three pairs of pedestal jaws 6, Figs. 8 and 16, are welded to, and depend from each frame 2 and carry liners 8 between which are journal boxes 12 carried on the axles. Each pedestal jaw comprises a pair of plates 74 welded to a bottom plate 76 and diverging at the top-where the edges are welded to the edges 84 of the plates 60. A transverse plate 78 is welded between the plates 74 and has a projecting tongue 80 which is welded to the inner surfaces of the plates 60. Spring seats 24 are secured to the underside of the frames 2 at their ends and centre spring seats 24 are secured to supporting plates 70 welded to the side members 60, so that they are lower than the outer spring seats 24. This is because the centre idler wheels of the bogie are of smaller diameter than the outer wheels, which are driven by traction motors. Helical coil springs are mounted between the spring seats 24 and spring seats provided on the journal boxes 12. The frames 2 are mounted in notches 110, Fig. 9, in transoms 4 to which they are welded, each transom comprising vertical plates 88, 90 having respectively horizontal flanges 92, 94, bottom plates 96, 98, closure plates 112 and vertical transverse strips 106, which are welded together. The bottom plates 96, 98 are slotted to accommodate tie bars 38, Fig. 4, and are provided with seats 34 for springs 32 which support the four corners of an H-shaped bolster 28. The tie bars 38 each have a pin and slot connection with a bracket 39 on the bottom of the transom and pass through the springs 32, being connected at the top to brackets 41 on the bolster. Each bolster is a welded assembly comprising a pair of vertical U-shaped side plates 114, Figs. 1 and 19, a pair of vertical end plates 116, four vertical cap plates 118, a pair of horizontal T-shaped top plates 120 and a single H-shaped bottom plate 126. The ends 30 of the bolster arms have upper spring seats 36, Fig. 4, for the springs 32. Longitudinally-facing wear plates 58 and lateral shock plates 136 are provided, the latter for engaging shock plates 138 on the side frames 2. The bolster has a centre bearing assembly comprising a centre bearing plate 146, a centre bearing ring 148, a centre bearing wear ring 150 and a bottom wear plate 152. Wear plates 154 are located laterally on each side of the depressed centre bearing to engage the underside of the railway vehicle body.
