Abstract

726,766. Railway bogies. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 27, 1953 [Jan. 12, 1953], No. 32937/53. Class 103 (6). A railway bogie comprises a floating beam bolster resiliently supported by bolster centring springs on a frame including longitudinal side frame members and transverse transom members, and stops on a single member at each end of the bolster to engage the side frame members to limit lateral and vertical movement of the bolster relative to the frame. As shown, the bogie frame comprises box-section side frame members 20 supported by coil springs 24 on journal boxes 6, and transoms 28 also of box section. Bent plates 30 welded to the transoms 28 serve as seats for spring assemblies 32 which support a beam-type bolster 34. Each spring assembly comprises a retaining cup 36 secured to the plate 30, spring shims 38, helical coil springs 40, 42 and an upper retaining cup 44 secured in a pocket 50 on the underside of the bolster 34. A plate 58 welded to the bolster at each end is provided with chafing plates 60, 64, for engagement respectively with chafing plates 62, 66 on the side frame 20 to limit relative lateral and vertical movement between the bolster and bogie frame. The plate 58 is also provided with a plate 68 and chafing plate 72 which is adapted to engage a chafing plate 70 on the underside of the locomotive body 48 to limit rolling movement. The transoms 28 are provided with diagonally opposite friction snubbers 74. Each snubber includes a U-shaped member 76 carrying a chafing plate 78 facing a chafing plate 80 on the bolster side plate 56. The member 76 has a housing 82 in which slides a plunger 92 having a friction plate 94, which is urged by a spring 96 to engage the chafing plate 80. A second pair of diagonally-opposed members 98 are mounted on the transoms 28 and have chafing plates 100 facing chafing plates 102 on the bolster side plates 56.
