Abstract

1,240,914. Railway bogie. MIDLAND-ROSS CORP. 30 Oct., 1969, No. 53238/69. Heading B7L. A four-wheel two axle railway car truck has a bolster 7 extending between a pair of side frames 2, each of which defines a pair of downwardly opening pedestals 16, each pedestal being defined by two spaced vertical pedestal legs 25 forming a pedestal opening 30 therebetween, which opening 30 receives a journal housing 50 of a journal saddle 52, the saddle 52 comprising the housing 50 and a longitudinally extending base; each side frame 2 includes load spring means 90, 91 extending between each journal saddle base and its associated pedestal 16 and a friction wedge 34 is disposed between at least one of the pedestal legs 25 of each pedestal 16 and the associated journal housing 50, the friction wedge 34 being held in frictional engagement with the journal housing 50 by the spring means 90, 91. Each friction wedge 34 engages a friction wedge seat 33 of a wear plate 32 and a friction plate 64 which plate 64 is disposed on the outwardly facing surface of a wall 61 or 62 of the journal housing 50. Each vertical wall of the journal housing 50 has a pair of outwardly extending guide flanges 70, 71 which define a pair of guide surfaces 72, 72, which faces 72 are in opposed relation to guide surfaces 42, 42. Downwardly facing surfaces 73 of the flanges 70, 71 may engage stop means 80 of the pedestal 16 while upwardly facing surfaces 74 of the pedestal 16 may engage stop means 48 of the pedestal 16. Tilting motion of the saddle 52 in the lateral direction with respect to the truck is initially resisted by the load spring assemblies 90, 91 and after a pre-determined amount of movement, surfaces 61, 62 of the journal housing 50 engage vertical surfaces of ribs 40, 41 of the pedestal legs 25. Further tilting of the saddle 52 is resisted by the lower ends of the pedestal legs 25 and pivoting of the saddle 52 about fulcrum points 47, the limit of tilting motion of the saddle 52 occurring when the walls of the journal housing 50 engage surfaces 46 of the legs 25. A bolster 7 has a damping unit 114 which comprises a resilient pad 115 having plates 117, 117 bonded to each side. The damping units 114 are positioned between pairs of opposed walls 102 and 111 or 103 and 112 so as to maintain walls 106 and 107 of the bolster 7 and bolster seat 9 respectively at a pre-determined distance apart. A pair of laterally spaced and vertically depending flanges 105, 105, Fig. 4, project downwardly from the wall 101 and side walls 102, 103 into a flanking relationship with central portion 8 of tension member 3. Each flange 105 has an inwardly facing surface 106 in spaced opposed relation with a laterally outwardly facing surface 107 provided on each of the side walls 11, 11a of tension member 3. A modified friction wedge (130) having an inclined flat wall (131) is described with reference to Fig. 6 (not shown). Full area contact between wedge (130) and the saddle is maintained by employing a wear plate (132) that may move relative to the side frame during side frame equalization. Wear plate (132) is bonded to one side of a pad (133) of rubber or rubber-like material and secured to the other side of the pad (133) is a metallic plate (134) which is receivable in the recess provided in the sloping wall 22 of the side frame.
