Abstract

1397247 Railway vehicle suspensions GLOUCESTER RAILWAY CARRIAGE & WAGON CO Ltd 8 Sept 1972 [17 Sept 1971] 43423/71 Heading B7L [Also in Division F2] A railway vehicle or bogie has a frame 11 providing at each axle journal 10 spaced hollow pedestal guide columns 12, 13 between which a saddle structure 14 is slidable to accommodate vertical movements with a friction damping pad 24 engaging one side of the saddle structure, and a pair of springs 19 mounted one within each column 12, 13 to bear on upwardly facing spring seat 18 carried by the saddle structure 14 at least are guide column 12 containing a spring abutment in the form of a wedge pot 20 having wedge surfaces 22, 23, which are relatively slidable and inclined upwardly towards the structure 14, the wedge pot 20 engaging the friction pad 24 by means of a split collet 25 which grips the pad 24 and is horizontal slidable in an opening in the column 12, the arrangement being such that the loading on the frame 11 produces a corresponding horizontal force which is applied to the damping pad 24 to vary the frictional damping force with loading on the vehicle or bogie. To this end the wedge pot 20 carries an abutment 27 directly engaging the split collet 25. The saddle structure has projecting edge flanges 28 which engage the pedestal guide columns 12, 13 by way of friction pads (not shown) to limit lateral movement of corresponding axle. Journal bearings 15 are provided in the journals 10 and the upper surfaces of these bearings are convexly curved to allow limited tilting of the axle. A resilient rubber pad 32 is provided atop the saddle structure 14 to limit upward movement thereof and movement in the opposite direction is limited by bolts 36.
