Abstract

887,865. Axle bearing guiding arrangements; springs. STANDARD CAR TRUCK CO. Feb. 25, 1958 [March 11, 1957], No. 6119/58. Classes 103(6) and 108(3). A railway truck includes a pedestal structure 10, Fig. 1, secured to a side sill 24 and having a top 23 and spaced guide columns 25, 26 provided with wear plates 25a, 26a, an axle journal 12 and bearing 16 therefor, an X-shaped saddle 15 mounted on the bearing 16 and having arms 34, 35, 38, 39 provided with wear pads 36, 37, 40, 41 slidably engaging the plates 25a, 26a, concentric load supporting springs 17, 18 (of which 18 is normally unstressed) engaging between the saddle and pedestal and wedges 21, under the urge of stabilizing springs 22, engaging the wear plates 25a, 26a and inclined surfaces 51 in pockets, e.g. 50 on the saddle 15. The inclined surface 53 of each wedge is crowned as described with reference to Fig. 7 (not shown) so that the wedge makes a line contact 56 with the surface 53 and the longitudinal axis X-X of the spring 22 passes through the line of contact. The saddle has a semicircular part 33 engaging the bearing 16 and a tie bar 28 is provided between the columns 25, 26. Each side of the saddle 15, Fig. 6, is provided with buffers 42 or 43 (not shown) and each buffer comprises a pair of wings, e.g. 42a, 42b embracing the sides of the column 25 or 26. Each wing carries a rubber element 59 bonded between steel plates 57, 58 of which the plate 57 is welded to the respective wing. The plates 57 are provided with stops to limit the compression of the elements 59 during lateral movement of the axle and the saddle,' as described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown).
