1364240 Railway vehicle undercarriages DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 24 Aug 1971 [27 Aug 1970] 41183/70 Heading B7L A railway vehicle bogie has chevron type rubber springs 6, 7 loaded in shear and compression between side frames 1 and transverse substantially rigid bolster member 5, rubber spring side bearers 8 between each end of the bolster 5 and the vehicle body mounted on the bogie and pivot control means comprising two axially-aligned precompressed rubber springs 13, 14 mounted along the longitudinal central vertical plane of the vehicle body between the bolster 5 and the body. Each spring is of sandwich construction and comprises a series of rubber blocks interspaced by metal plates to which the blocks are bonded. The transverse length of the precompressed rubber springs 13, 14 is greater than their vertical depth such that due to the precompression of the springs the control means has a substantially zero vertical stiffness and a high horizontal stiffness in the longitudinal direction of the bogie and therefore transmits very little of the vehicle weight to the bolster, vertical forces being transmitted directly to side frames 1 via the side bearers 8 and the chevron springs 6, 7. The side bearers 8 may be positioned as shown at points further from the bogie longitudinal central vertical plane than the position of the chevron springs 6, 7 or may be at substantially the same position at the springs. Vertical damping may be provided by means of dampers between the bolster ends and the vehicle body if required.
