Abstract
809,190. Combined buffer and drawgear. SOUTHERN PACIFIC CO. June 11 1957, No. 18378/57. Class 103(5) A rail vehicle has a sliding sill 12 to which the couplings 18 are attached and which is accommodated within the centre sill 11, relative movement between the sills being opposed by compression springs 39 and by the frictional engagement of the movable plates 38 carried by the sliding sill 12 with the stationary plates 39 carried by the centre sill 11. The sets of friction plates are compressed by a pressure plate 46 which is engaged by the piston 69 of a hydraulic press 50 acted on by fluid pressurized in a pump assembly 49 secured to the centre sill 11 so that the pressure applied to the friction plates increases with increase in relative velocity between the sliding sill 12 and the centre sill 11. The piston 53 of the pump assembly 49 is connected to a vertically movable crosshead 55, actuated by links 57 pivoted on brackets 58 secured to the sliding sill 12 and the flow of fluid past the piston 53 whence the pressure supplied to the press 50 is controlled by a metering pin 61. The sets of friction plates are preferably of the shape shown in Fig. 6 when they are subjected to compressive forces by the plates 40 during buffing. The gear may, however, be modified so that the plates are in tension when in use in which case the plates may be flat. Instead of the link arrangement shown in Fig. 4 for actuating the piston 53 flat. Instead of the ling arrangement a double inclined plane arrangement may be used to cause vertical movement of the piston 53. An arrangement is also described in which the pressure plate for the friction plates is of double inclined plane shape and a hydraulic press with an incorporated metring device has a piston head of complimentary shape.
