Abstract
400,402. Power hammers. BECHE & GROHS GES., H³ckeswagen, Rhineland, Germany. Sept. 22, 1932, No. 26409. Convention date, March 4. [Class 83 (iv).] An elastic-fluid-operated hammer with two vertically moving die heads working against one another has one head only directly actuated by the fluid and the other head is mechanically coupled to it. As shown in Fig. 1, the head 1 is actuated by the ram 4 working in the cylinder 5 and is coupled by ropes and pulleys 7, 14 to the other head 2. If the lower head 2 is to have a slower movement than the head 1 pulleys 8, 9 of different diameters are employed and the head 2 is made larger than the head 1 so that the impact energy of the two heads is the same. The area of the piston 6 effective for raising the head 1 is such that the fluid pressure alone cannot raise it so that if the lower head remains suspended it is not possible for the head 1 to rise and then fall and strike the slack ropes. The ropes are connected to the heads by spring buffers 11. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the heads are coupled by rods 27, 28 and levers 29.
