Abstract

547,126. Shearing. MAYNE, J. S. and DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Aug. 21, 1941, No. 10672. [Class 83 (iv)] In a machine for shearing blooms, billets, bars, &c particularly of the open-sidec type, in which the upper and the lower shearing heads are moved in sequence during the cycle of operations, by upper and lower levers linked to gether at their central points, one end of the lower lever acts directly on the lower head whilst its other end is connected by links to a fixed pivot. The heads 13, 14 slidably guided in the frame 11, and carrying the knives 15, 16, have semi-cylindrical sockets 27, 28 engaged by correspondingly shaped blocks 25, 26 on levers 20, 21 connected together by links 24 and pivots 22, 23. The upper-lever 20 is operated bv a connecting rod 30 and crank pin 31 on a crank shaft 32 driven through a clutch from reduction gearing in a gear box 34 and the lower lever 20 is connected by a link 36 and pivot 37 to the frame 11. The weight of the head 13 is counterbalanced by hydraulic rams 39 connected to a cross head 40 secured by rods 41 to the head 13. When the machine is at rest, the lever 21 rests on a flat surface 45 on the frame. In operation the lever 20 first turns about the pivot 22 to depress the head 13 until an extension 42, Fig. 2, of the head grips the work piece 43 against a roller 44 on the frame. Further movement of the crank shaft 32 causes the lever 20 to turn about the pairs 25, 27 raising the links 24 so that the lever 21 turns about the pivot 37 and the head 14 is raised to effect the shear
