Abstract

1,270,556. Railway car buffing and draw gear. ACF INDUSTRIES Inc. 7 July, 1969 [9 July, 1968], No. 34137/69. Heading B7T. In a combined buffing and draw gear, in which a telescopic hydraulic cushioning gear 36 is arranged in a centre sill, buffing forces, in excess of a predetermined value after compressing the gear 36 by-pass the hydraulic mechanism and are transmitted directly, through the outer cylinder 40, to a flange 30 on a rear stop casting 22, having a separate buff cushion stop surface 26. This protects the gear 36 from damage by high magnitude shock forces in buff and prevents forces from being concentrated at the rear of casting 22. The gear 36 is normally extended, by compressed air in chamber 50, so that shoulders 118, 120 abut lugs 32 and 34 for the direct transmission of draft forces to the sill 14. Buffing forces of low magnitude are transmitted through the hydraulic fluid in chambers 42 and 44 free piston 48, the air in chamber 50 and the curved interface of plates 52 and 116, to the buff cushion stop surface 26. During compressing of the gear 36, metering pin 86 restricts the flow of fluid through orifice 94. Chamber 46 is filled through ports 108. In the fully compressed condition plate 31 abuts flange 30. Draft forces, applied at an intermediate state in the compression of gear 36, are transmitted to the flange 28 through plate 52. Under draft, the return flow of fluid, through ports 108, is throttled, in known manner, by valve member 110.
