Abstract

806,858. Stapling machines. ELASTIC AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT VORM. M. VOGEL A. G. Oct. 16, 1956, No. 31472/56. Class 89(3) A stapling machine comprises a base plate on which are pivoted on a common pin a magazine and a magazine housing which latter contains a staple expeller, and includes staple feeding means and means to lock the magazine and housing so that they pivot together which can be unlocked by lateral displacement of either the magazine or housing with regard to the pin against the action of a spring. A housing 1 and staple support 8 pivoted at pin 3 in lugs 4 of a base plate 5 carrying an anvil 6 are normally spaced from the base plate by a spring 12. To load, the housing is swung back through 180 degrees until it engages an abutment edge 21 on the base plate which acts as an axis for further pivotal movement until the rear ends of each slot 2 in the housing 1 bear against the pin 3, when the locking noses 9 of the support 8 disengage from the slots 11 in the front wall of the housing 1, the housing and support separating under pressure from the spring 12. Staples are inserted into the support which is then passed back into the housing. The staple feed mechanism comprises a toothed rail 30 guided on pins mounted in the housing and a slide 38 mounted in the staple support and urged against the last staple. At each stapling operation the rail 30 retreats under pressure from the spring 32, the split tongue 39 of the slide 38 engaging a more forward tooth 37 of the rail 30 so as to urge the staples forward by the width of one staple on decompression of the spring 32. A parallel and similar fixed rail (not shown) in which the tongue 39 also engages prevents accidental entrainment of the slide during rearward movement of the rail 30. In a modification illustrated in Fig. 4 (not shown) pins on the side of the staple support and bayonet slots in the side walls of the housing replace the noses 9 and slots 10.
