Abstract

1,041,145. Belt fastening appliances. HAYDEN-NILOS Ltd. March 25, 1965 [April 4, 1964], No. 13973/64. Heading F2Q. A machine for stapling a U-shape half-joint, Fig. 2, not shown, to the end of a belt comprises a cheek 2A, 2B in a base 1 and a block 5 slidable on guides 4 under the control of a screw-and-nut mechanism 36, a comb-bar 14, 15 having a series of slots 16 to receive the base portions 23 of the half-joint and a slide 29, 30 having an arm 31 to engage and hold these base portions in the machine, an upper arm 32 having a hooked end co-operating with a stop 34 to prevent complete withdrawal of the slide. A slot 10 in block 5 has pairs of opposed grooves 11 to receive a batch of staples 18 in a friction-tight manner, the staples being held together by a wire 19. The comb-bar enters a recess in block 5. A press tool, Fig. 3 (not shown), has three pairs of projections on its end for insertion in grooves 11 and an end recess to enable the tool to engage the staples and not wire 19. In operation, a half-joint is inserted in comb-bar 14, 15 and locked therein by slide 29, 30, the lower arm of the half-joint rests on cheek part 2A; the belt end is inserted in the half-joint and a batch of staples in grooves 11. The block 5 is then lowered on to the half-joint and with a hammer and the press-tool, the staples are forced, three at a time, through holes in the upper and lower arms of the half-joint, the ends 22 of the staples being bent inwards by the groove 3 in cheek 2A. The block is then raised and the slide 29, 30 releases the half-joint which is then inserted in adjacent openings 16 so that the half-joint rests on cheek 2B. A further half-joint is inserted in the first openings 16; the slide then locks the half-joints in position, the block is lowered and the new half-joint stapled in position; the press tool is then used on the first attached half-joint so that the staple ends are forced by the plain cheek part 2B into grooves in the arms of the half-joint. The groove in cheek part 2A may turn the staple ends in the same direction and a plainsided press-tool may be used in the plain part of slot 10 to press the staple ends into the grooves in the half-joint.
