Abstract
806,185. Supply systems for discharge lamps. LEUENBERGER, H. March 25, 1957 [March 27, 1956], No. 9713/57. Class 38 (4). A two-terminal starting switch for fluorescent tubes comprises three circuits. The first circuit comprises a coil 12 of relay 12-17, a contact 18 and resistor 19 connected in series with heaters 4, 5 of lamp 1. Closing switch 8 energizes coil 12, closing contacts 17 connecting the second circuit, comprising opposing coil 13, negative coefficient resistor 21 and bi-metal 22, also the third circuit comprising positive coefficient resistor 23. The shunting effect of the second and third circuits reduces the current through coil 12, but armature 15 is held by remanent magnetism. As resistor 21 heats, the demagnetizing effect of coil 13 increases and contact 17 opens. In the event of several false starts, contacts 18 open to enable contacts 17 to cool between switching operations. The total current through the second and third circuits remains approximately constant due to the opposite characteristics of resistors 22, 23.
