Abstract
560,707. Control systems for space discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 4, 1942, No. 17256. Convention date, Dec. 10, 1941. [Class 38 (iv)] To prevent continued attempts to start a defective discharge tube a starting switch 25, 26, controlling an electrode heating circuit and comprising a bimetallic element 25 heated by a resistance 29, whereby the heating circuit, closed at starting, is opened after a time interval to cause an inductance 14 to provide the starting impulse, comprises also a bimetallic element 26 heated by a high resistance 30 in shunt with the switch, whereby repeated operations of the switch produce a progressive movement of both elements 25, 26 in such a direction as to cause eventual contact between element 25 and a contact 31' connected to element 26, whereby the switch 25, 26 is short-circuited. The heating resistance 29 maintains this short circuit until the tube circuit is opened at the switch 15 or the tube is removed..The resistance 30 is arranged for slow heating and cooling. Its temperature-resistance coefficient determines the time available for attempts at starting and may be negative. The switch may operate in air or in an envelope containing hydrogen, helium, or a vacuum. Specifications 542,853 and 560,075 are referred to.
