Abstract

801,199. Piston packing. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938), Ltd. April 17, 1957 [April 27, 1956], No. 13007/56. Class 122 (1). A. piston and piston ring assembly comprises a split piston ring 2 housed in a groove in the piston 1 and a springy ring segment 4 having a free outer diameter d<SP>1</SP> less than the outer diameter of the piston and located between the ring 2 and the bottom of the groove, and means, such as pegs 6, to prevent circumferential movement of the segment in the groove. The invention is designed to obviate or minimize piston slap and the ring segment is located on the thrust side of the piston, the groove being deepened on that side, as by eccentric turning at 5 or by arcuate recessing, to receive the segment.
