Abstract

799,760. Hydraulic-shock absorbers. SOC. D ES FORGES ET ATELIERS DU CREUSOT. March 14, 1956 [March 17, 1955], No. 7973/56. Class 108(3) A shock absorber comprises a first cylinder 8 in which is movable a plunger 10 which itself defines a second cylinder 10<SP>1</SP> communicating with the cylinder 8, a free piston 18 in the cylinder 10<SP>1</SP> isolating part of the latter from the cylinder 8, a profiled rod 21 carried by the cylinder 8 and arranged so as to pass through an orifice 20 connecting the cylinders 8, 10<SP>1</SP>, during movement of the plunger 10 into the cylinder 8, and valve means 27, 28, through the inner end wall of an annular chamber 25 surrounding the plunger 10, so that fluid passes through the end wall more freely when the chamber 25 is increased, than when it is decreased. The plunger 10 carries a piston 11 in which is formed the orifice 20 and also passages 27 which lead to the chamber 25. The passages 27 are controlled by a flap valve 28 formed with restriction passages. The space on the left-hand side of the piston 18 is charged with compressed air. For this purpose an air supply conduit 38 and a manometer 37, Fig. 4. are secured to threaded inlets at the outer end of the plunger 10, and are connected with the interior of the cylinder 10<SP>1</SP> by unscrewing a needle valve 34. The shock absorber shown, is applied to terminal buffers for rail vehicles at the lower end of a slope in a mine. The shock absorber is disposed below the rails, the end 9 of the cylinder 8 being secured to the ground, and the outer end of the plunger 10 being connected by a pivot 4 and link 1 to the buffer (not shown). The pivot 4 carries rollers 5 which run in guide tracks 6, 7. The cylinder 8 carries cooling fins 13.
