Abstract

868,980. Hydro pneumatic shock-absorbers. SHORT BROS. & HARLAND Ltd. April 7, 1959 [April 18, 1958], No. 12454/58. Class 108(3). In an aeroplane undercarriage shock absorber, movement of the slidable tube 13 Fig. 1 is initially resisted by air compression, in the housing 10 acting on the crosssectional area of the tube 13 and in the latter part of the stroke the tube 13 engages a floating annular piston 18 to increase the effective, area. The tube 13 is engaged internally by a plunger tube 19 carrying a piston 20 having orifices 201 to provide dashpot action, some of the orifices 201 being closed by a flap valve (not shown) during the return stroke. The tube 13 also encloses a concentric metering tube 24 having holes in the wall which are progressively passed by the piston 20. A piston 25 discourages emulsification. Stops 131 on the tube 13 engage the annular piston 18 at the end of the initial part of the stroke, the piston 18 normally resting against stops 23 on the housing 10. An additional compressed air chamber 26 may be provided in the lower portion of the tube 13 and is separated from the oil by a floating piston 28.
