Abstract

942,804. Hydro-pneumatic suspension units. SVENSKA AEROPLAN A.B. March 18, 1960 [March 31, 1959], No. 9615/60. Heading F2S. A hydro-pneumatic suspension unit comprises a liquid-filled cylinder 2, a piston 6 with damping passages 12, 15, 18 and a tubular pistonrod 5, and an upper member 3 with an extension on which is mounted a cylindrical chamber 25. The tubular piston-rod 5 and chamber 25 have further pistons 19 and 26 separating compressed air 21, 29 in their lower portions from the liquid of the cylinder 2. When the unit is loaded piston-rod 5 enters the cylinder 2, liquid passing through damping passage 12 to push piston 19 down and compress the air 21 and also passing through passages 15, 18 in the piston 6 past a choking disc 17, which provides more resistance to flow in rebound than during loading, to an annular chamber 42 (Fig. 2, not shown) formed between piston-rod 5 and cylinder 2. When the load exceeds a value predetermined by the static air pressure of the two air chambers, the liquid also passes through passage 31 in upper member 3 and depresses piston 26 compressing air 29. The chamber 25 may be arranged as a coaxial extension of cylinder 2 and in an alternative construction the pistons 19, 26 have elastically deformable walls and move in variable cross-section chambers.
