Abstract

478,591. Shock - absorbers. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and BOUGHTON, E. B. July 20, 1936. No. 20123. [Class 108 (iii)] In a shock-absorber comprising an outer cylinder tube, a plunger tube slidably mounted therein to produce an internal space of variable volume containing a liquid for damping and a gas under pressure, a constriction being tormed in the plunger tube for damping the flow of liquid, an extensible partition member is secured within the plunger tube to separate the liquid from the compressed gas, the partition member being entirely independent mechanically of the cylinder tube. In one form, Fig. 1, an aircraft shock-absorber strut comprises a piston tube 13 slidable in a cylinder 10 filled with oil 18. The piston 16 includes a flutter valve 17 and has secured to the underside thereof a bellows 19 which separates the oil and compressed air.in the space 20. Compression of the strut causes dilation of the bellows thus increasing the pressure of the air in space 20. According to modifications a cylindrical flexible partition is secured between bosses formed on the piston and the base of the piston tube, respectively or the piston tube is divided into two compartments by a flexible diaphragm. In a further modification, Fig. 4, a metal partition is employed which may be acted on by an external spring 27 or internal spring 29. In a still further modification, Fig. 5, a conical partition is arranged progressively to contact with the wall of the piston tube on dilation and thus to offer an increasing resilient resistance to dilation. Alternatively the walls of partition member 19 may be of varying thickness for the same purpose.
